GPI experts took part in a business brunch on the topic of green investment – “Green Horizons: entrepreneurship and sustainable development in Kazakhstan”

On Friday, September 27, 2024, a business brunch on the theme “Green Horizons: Entrepreneurship and sustainable development in Kazakhstan” was held in the multifunctional Abu Dhabi Plaza complex.

The organizer was the Public Foundation for Sustainable Development of Central Asia “Creative Innovation Institute”.

The event brought together representatives of government agencies, business and international organizations to discuss ways to integrate environmental, social and management (ESG) standards into business activities in Kazakhstan.

Among the key speakers were representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the United Nations, the AIFC, Halyk Bank, KazMunaiGas Engineering and other leaders in the field of sustainable development.

GPI Group took an active part in the panel session “Financial support and programs for eco-entrepreneurs of Kazakhstan”, sharing its experience in promoting ESG principles:

“Green financing is becoming not just a concept, but a sought-after tool. Investors on the world’s largest exchanges, including KASE and AIFC, pay special attention to “green” and social securities, diversifying their portfolio towards increasing sustainability.

At the same time, we see that Kazakhstan’s requirements for the ESG agenda are being tightened. Since 2024, the recommendations of the ARRR on disclosure of information in the field of ESG, as well as environmental and social risk management, have been in force in Kazakhstan. The requirements of the Regulator will apply through financial institutions and banks to borrowers in both the corporate sector and SMEs.

As a company with a number of completed projects in the field of implementing ESG principles in business activities, we recommend that companies start with such basic issues as:

– development of key ESG documents (Sustainable Development strategies, codes, policies, etc.);

– disclosure of non–financial information – mandatory development and publication of a Report on the sustainable development of the company, which in the future must comply with international reporting standards;

– training employees in the basics of ESG principles so that key departments have the same vector of development of the company.

The adoption of these basic measures will help companies strengthen and strengthen their competitive positions in the market, including abroad, attract foreign partners and investors, as well as attract green financing in the Kazakh capital market, where demand for green securities is significantly increasing.
