Harvard Climate Symposium – Discussion of the Voluntary Climate Coalition

We continue publishing news from the Harvard Climate Symposium, organized by the Salata Institute for Climate & Sustainability as part of Harvard Climate Action Week.

The Harvard Climate Symposium provided a platform where politics, science, business, and culture came together to discuss the future of the planet.

Substantial discussions focused on international cooperation – from Paris to COP30. Participants recalled the 2015 Paris Agreement, which transformed climate diplomacy. Much has been accomplished in the past ten years: a 4°C scenario has been avoided, and a legal framework for global climate policy has been established, but many unresolved issues remain.

The main one is responsibility. Countries often make commitments, but monitoring and enforcement mechanisms remain weak. Similarly, many corporations make grandiose statements, but it is important to verify their actual actions. As experts emphasized, true sustainability begins not with the purchase of offsets, but with changes in the supply chains themselves.

An innovative part of the program was the discussion of the idea of creating a voluntary climate coalition. Researchers from Harvard and MIT proposed a mechanism through which a group of countries could coordinate carbon pricing, which would allow for faster emission reductions and attract financing for adaptation.

For Brazil, which will host COP30 in November, this is one of the priorities of its “environmental transformation plan.” Indonesia sees such a coalition as a way to protect its industries from discrimination, and for Africa, this mechanism opens new opportunities for raising funds and leveraging competitive advantages, for example in hydropower.

Participation in the Symposium was a significant event for GPI Group. The company gained first-hand insight into the trends shaping the global agenda.

Session topics, covering methane emissions reduction, AI applications in energy, training specialists for the new climate economy, and participation in international climate initiatives, directly address the challenges and opportunities facing Kazakhstan: from the oil and gas industry and energy grid modernization to education and global integration.
