The Second Smart Plastic Zone Awards Ceremony Held in Almaty

The second awards ceremony of the Smart Plastic Zone project — an initiative aimed at promoting a culture of responsible plastic use — took place in Almaty. In a festive atmosphere, twelve more companies were honored with the Smart Plastic Zone distinction, recognizing their contribution to reducing plastic waste and promoting environmentally responsible practices.

The project is implemented with the support of Coca-Cola, the GreenUrban Association, and GPI-Lab LLP. The Smart Plastic Zone awards are presented in two categories: Silver, for organizations that have taken initial steps toward sustainable plastic use, and Gold, for leaders in environmental responsibility actively implementing eco-friendly practices.

The first award ceremony was held in March in Astana, where recognition was given to organizations such as the Development Bank of Kazakhstan, Baiterek National Managing Holding, “Zaman” Elite Kazakh School LLP, Miras International School, restaurants, hotels, and others.

This time, another 15 companies received awards, including Almaty Socio-Entrepreneurial Corporation JSC, two IBIS hotels, Narxoz University, K. Zhubanov Aktobe Regional University, the restaurant Villa Dei Fiori, as well as other offices, financial institutions, hotels, and restaurants. The participants were recognized for taking tangible steps to reduce their plastic footprint, introducing alternative materials, and implementing sustainable solutions.

It is also worth noting that interest in the project continues to grow, and its geographic reach is expanding. In addition to the pilot cities — Almaty, Astana, and Karaganda — companies from Petropavlovsk and Aktobe are actively joining the initiative. More and more organizations are submitting applications, undergoing the verification process, and receiving their well-deserved certification marks.

According to Yuliya Yakupbayeva, Chair of the Board at the GreenUrban Association, the goal of the project is not only to recognize businesses but also to build an ecosystem where sustainable practices become the norm:
“We are pleased to see consistent interest from companies. More and more participants are going beyond basic requirements and actively implementing environmentally responsible solutions. We continue to collect data, share best practices, and support businesses on this journey.”

As part of the event, participants receive Smart Plastic Zone plaques in two levels — Gold and Silver — as well as a certificate of participation. The event also provides a platform for attendees to learn from each other’s experiences, exchange ideas, strengthen connections, and find like-minded partners for future collaboration.

Alexandra Akkirman, Director of Government Affairs, Communications, and Sustainability for Coca-Cola in Central Asia and the Caucasus, noted:
“By supporting this project, we — along with other companies — are helping shape responsible behavior. Initiatives like this offer clear guidance, from reducing plastic use to ensuring proper sorting. We believe that the contribution of each company truly matters.”

The Smart Plastic Zone project is open to all companies interested in adopting a more sustainable approach to plastic usage. Participation is free of charge. Applications can be submitted through the websites: www.GPI.kz, www.GreenUrban.kz, and www.smartplasticzone.kz.
